A year after this he won two international awards.1)Best Dancehall Artist 2020 Award at the African Entertainment Awards United States of America (AEAUSA) 2).Best African/ Dancehall Entertainer International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA). The best Zimbabwean dancehall reggae artist in my world. good to see the world realizing our national treasure. surely he doesn't need international collaboration to be recognized. thanks, Trevor for this interview I always come back he and there.
Mangoma / Zimdancehall started way back in the 1980s. Unfortunately the genre was dismissed as "zvembanje" or "Zvechipfana". The genre couldn't compete for airplay with established genres such as sungura, gospel, soul and r&b, and even Jamaican reggae. Thanks to the then Minister of Information Professor Jonathan Moyo's 100% , or is it 75% local drive, the airwaves were opened up to more local artists. Mainstream recording studios were previously not open to dancehall. The Prof Moyo drive led to the opening of more backyard studios where Zimdancehall and other local genres such as "Urban Grooves were recorded, without the stringent screening that took place at the established studios. This led to the unleashing of raw talent, which would otherwise have gone unnoticed. The opening up of more radio stations also blew the airwaves wide open for new entrants. Without an aorta of doubt, Zimdancehall and Urban Grooves as well as other local genres owe a lot to The Prof, hate or like him.
"It can't be a coincidence…twice…",Winky is really good at responding to questions in this conversation, well done Trevor you really did an impressive job.
