THE ORIGINS OF SUNGURA MUSIC:
Although we managed to Zimbabwenise it,the fact remains that Sungura music did not originate from Zimbabwe.And the Zimbabwenisation did not stop,we ended up with other Sungura subgenres like Zhakata’s Zora,Dendera from the Chimbetu brothers,Tazvida’s Smoko,etc.
I know some will ask,do we have genres that originated from Zimbabwe? yes we do,& like Mbira.Yes Mbira is a parent genre on it’s own with it’s different subgenres like Chimurenga,Mtukudzi’s Katekwe,etc.We also have Jiti.Thats why Mbira & Jiti are the most international genres from Zimbabwe.
But although Sungura did not originate here,we also managed to Zimbabwenise it.Here is the interesting history.
